2000 Business Week / Architectural Record Award Unique among design award programs, the Business Week/Architectural Record Awards evaluate entries on both their architectural aesthetic quality and how the project advances the clientís business goals. The Hanjin Container Terminal Entry Complex at the Port of Long Beach is among ten projects selected for the 2000 Business Week/ Architectural Record Awards. We are honored to be in the company of the other international selections published in both Architectural Record Magazine and Business Week.
Robert Stewart Architects was responsible for design of the buildings that comprise the entry gate complex which include the administration building (gate house), entry guard buildings, camera and sign structures, truck canopy, and driver services building. Through the collaborative efforts of Hanjin and Total Terminals Inc., the design team was able to understand and successfully design a terminal in response to the companyís operational process and its goal to increase productivity.
Hanjinís business mission statement for this terminal was to develop a new facility that would facilitate projected future cargo volume increases, as well as to increase productivity by improving terminal organization, traffic flow, and the collaboration of three worker groups. Hanjinís goal was to move 500,000 twenty-foot containers through the terminal each year.
The results far exceeded that goal with Hanjin now the Port of Long Beachís largest operating terminal. In 1999, two years after moving into the new terminal, Hanjin made the equivalent of 1 million 20-foot shipping container moves, twice the 1995 goal!
Long Beach Day Nursery Is In!
On March 14, 2001 the children and teachers began enjoying their new day care center at the East Branch of the Long Beach Day Nursery. The new 8,412 square foot wing of the building provides space for infant and toddler care not previously offered at this branch. The addition has been named for the current Mayor of Long Beach, Beverly OíNeill. Mrs. OíNeill is a former student of the Nursery and is pleased to have her name be associated with enriching the lives of another generation of children.Built in 1959, the original 6,412 square foot building has been completely remodeled to provide updated classrooms for 36 month to 60 month old children. A new pitched roof and other changes to the original building will mirror the residential form of the new wing, creating a new unified and inviting appearance.
